I was reading your comments about the cost of a fibre line and thought I would actually have a look and see how much it would cost for a laugh. If you live close to the main exchange you could apply for “SP Connect” at a shade over £9k per year (I think this is the ISP broadband interconnection though – could well be wrong!). If you want a 10Mb IP feed, which I guess would be the closest thing to a hig speed internet link you could get, would set you back £43k a year for 3 years!!! Not a direct comparisson I know but intresting figures.

I know... unfortunately here in Guernsey, Cable & Wireless are the only provider of telecomms networks... you can see where this is heading!!

Holy crap! What are they running a line straight from your house to the Internet backbone or something? That’s one thing I hate about all this broadband stuff, no matter what, it’s still just a little wire that comes off the telephone pole (or underground). If the ability to connect your house to the wire is there, why does it cost so much? Or more importantly, why does fiber optic cost more than DSL or Cable? Aside from the higher speeds, it’s basically the same thing.

They really are giving us the shaft here... but never the less... you have to at least appreciate what we have and 1Mbit is a boost compared to the old days of the modem!!

LOL, welcome to Guernsey!!! We only had 512Kbps introduced a couple of years ago and that has been at the bargain price of £26 per month!!! Beat that for a rip-off! They have now upgraded the accounts to 1mbit but kept the price the same! A fiber line is somewhere in the region of £10,000 per year or thereabouts!! Maybe by 2020 they’ll get it sorted!

1mbit, that's it? That was sooo 3 years ago! Once you go fiber, you never go back. Sacramento (not all areas though) has had the option to go with fiber optic for quite some time.
